Car theory test
You can take driving lessons before passing the theory test, but you must pass the theory test before booking your practical driving test.
The car theory test has two parts:
- Multiple-choice questions: 50 questions, with a pass mark of 43.
- Hazard perception: 14 video clips, with a pass mark of 44 out of 75.
You must pass both parts. The current car theory-test fee is £23.
Lorry and bus theory tests
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence part 1 theory test is booked as two separate tests:
- Part 1a — multiple choice: 100 questions, with a pass mark of 85. The current fee is £26.
- Part 1b — hazard perception: 19 video clips containing 20 developing hazards, with a pass mark of 67 out of 100. The current fee is £11.
Additional Driver CPC tests may be required if you intend to drive professionally.
Language and accessibility
In Great Britain the theory test is available in English, Welsh or British Sign Language. Help can be arranged for a reading difficulty, disability or health condition, but it must be requested when the test is booked.
