Improve your Road Skills with Advanced Driving Lessons

Guidance reviewed: 25 September 2026.

Further training can help full-licence holders develop their observation, planning, vehicle control and confidence. It can be useful after passing the test, when returning to driving, when starting to use unfamiliar roads or vehicles, or when preparing for an advanced-driving assessment.

Choose training for your goal

Explain what you want to improve before booking. Depending on your needs, an instructor may suggest:

  • a refresher lesson after a break from driving;
  • motorway, rural-road, night or bad-weather experience;
  • help with parking, observation or confidence;
  • Pass Plus for a recently qualified driver; or
  • preparation for a recognised advanced-driving course or assessment.

Ask who will provide the training, what qualification or scheme it follows, whether an assessment or certificate is included, how long it normally takes and the full price. Training may improve skills, but it does not guarantee a lower insurance premium.

Keep developing safe habits

Good further training should build systematic observation and planning, appropriate speed and space, smooth control and consideration for other road users. Continue to use the current Highway Code and agree clear, realistic goals with the instructor.

Find a driving instructor and ask about suitable post-test or advanced training in your area. You can also read about Pass Plus and refresher training.
