Fleet Training and Fleet Drivers

Guidance reviewed: 25 September 2026.

Fleet driver training is intended for people who drive cars or vans as part of their work. It can support an employer's wider arrangements for managing road risk, but a course does not replace the employer's risk assessment, journey planning, vehicle checks or supervision.

Start with the work and the driver

The Health and Safety Executive advises employers to consider the journey, driver or rider and vehicle. Training should therefore reflect the driver's experience, the vehicle, the journeys undertaken and risks such as fatigue, distraction, time pressure, weather and unfamiliar roads.

A provider may offer an initial assessment, on-road coaching, vehicle-familiarisation, eco-driving or refresher sessions. Ask what the assessment covers, how training is tailored, what written report or record is supplied and whether the provider has experience of the relevant vehicles and work.

Find schools offering fleet training and enter your town to narrow the results. Course scope, suitability and price must be agreed with the provider.
