Driving Refresher Course or Refresher Training

Guidance reviewed: 25 September 2026.

Refresher lessons are for full-licence holders who want structured practice or an independent assessment of their driving. They may help after a long break, a change of vehicle, a move to unfamiliar roads, a loss of confidence or a specific experience such as motorway driving.

Agree a clear purpose

Tell the instructor what concerns you and where you normally drive. A first session can identify strengths and priorities, followed by lessons focused on the skills and conditions that matter to you. Possible subjects include:

  • observation, planning and road positioning;
  • parking and manoeuvring;
  • roundabouts, rural roads, dual carriageways or motorways;
  • night driving or difficult weather; and
  • becoming familiar with a different car or transmission.

Ask whether the lesson uses your car or the instructor's, what insurance is required, how progress will be discussed and the full price. The number of sessions should reflect your goals rather than a fixed package.

If a medical condition or disability may affect safe driving, use the official service to check whether it must be reported to DVLA and discuss any vehicle adaptations or lesson needs before booking.

Find a driving instructor and ask whether they offer refresher training in your area.
